Woods Canyon Lake, located about 30 miles east of Payson off Hwy 280, is one of the most accessible of the Rim lakes with a beautiful scenic setting surrounded by Ponderosa pines with an elevation of 7500 feet. The lake, approximately 55 acres in size with an average depth of 25 to 40 feet, is stocked with Rainbows and Brown Trout every week from May through September.

Payson is a part of a spectacular geological area known as The Mogollon Rim, referred to as "The Rim." Completely surrounded by National Forest, neighboring communities include Pine, Strawberry, Kohl's Ranch and Christopher Creek.

The largest national forest in Central Arizona is The Coconino National Forest, which is comprised of 1.8 million acres. The Mogollon Rim roughly bound the Coconino National Forest on the south. The Rim is spectacular and the best way to experience the Rim is to hike along Forest Route 300.

Traveling up Hwy 87, known as the Beeline Highway, from metropolitan Phoenix, north to Payson you experience a breathtaking scenic drive that gradually climbs to just over 5000 feet. When you continue north on Highway 87, approximately 19 miles, you'll enter Pine then Strawberry at an elevation of 6000 feet.

One of my favorite pass times is horseback riding at Kohl's Ranch climbing through the wooded trails experiencing the autumn tricolors of the turning leaves in October or riding through the lightly snow dusted back trails in February.
